چکیده

Present increasing trend of population is alarming for food shortage. It was estimated that by the year of 2050 the population rate may increase up to 9 billion. Rapid increase of human population together with global climate variability resulted in increased demand of plant based food and energy sources. Conventional breeding is still limited due to genetic restrictions (high heterozygosity and polyploidy), long juvenile periods, self-incompatibility, resources restricted to parental genome and exposed to sexual combination. Thus, there is an urgent need for the biotechnology-assisted crop improvement, which ultimately aimed to obtain novel plant traits. Plant genetic engineering has opened new avenues to modify crops, and provided new solutions to solve specific needs.

A Review on Production of Glyphosate-Resistant Plants with Emphasis on Molecular Methods

Herbicide-resistant plants are one of the most common plants that comprise the majority of the total population of transgenic plants. Glyphosate is an herbicide that controls a wide range of plant species. Position of these herbicides reaction is 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) that only exists in plants and some bacteria. This herbicide was known to be suitable and safe for...

Transgenic Cabbage Expressing Cry1Ac1 Does Not Affect the Survival and Growth of the Wolf Spider, Pardosa astrigera L. Koch (Araneae: Lycosidae).

Both herbivores that consume transgenic crops and their predators can be exposed to insecticidal proteins expressed in those crops. We conducted a tritrophic bioassay to evaluate the ecotoxicological impacts that Bt cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) expressing Cry1Ac1 protein might have on the wolf spider (Pardosa astrigera), a non-target generalist predator. Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent...

Transgenic Approaches for Development of Disease Resistance in Banana

Banana (Musa spp.) is one of the most important fruit crops in the world. India contributes around 37.2 % of total world production and is the largest producer in the world producing 28.45 million tones from an area of 0.796 million hectares with a net productivity of 35.7 MT/ha (http://faostat3.fao.org/faostatgateway/go/to/home/E; http://nhb.gov.in/area-pro/ database-2012.pdf). The edible bana...

A microRNA allele that emerged prior to apple domestication may underlie fruit size evolution.

The molecular genetic mechanisms underlying fruit size remain poorly understood in perennial crops, despite size being an important agronomic trait. Here we show that the expression level of a microRNA gene (miRNA172) influences fruit size in apple. A transposon insertional allele of miRNA172 showing reduced expression associates with large fruit in an apple breeding population, whereas over-ex...

Engineering pathogen resistance in crop plants: current trends and future prospects.

Transgenic crops are now grown commercially in 25 countries worldwide. Although pathogens represent major constraints for the growth of many crops, only a tiny proportion of these transgenic crops carry disease resistance traits. Nevertheless, transgenic disease-resistant plants represent approximately 10% of the total number of approved field trials in North America, a proportion that has rema...
